"Theo’s a bit of a pin-up, I guess. I imagine that if we were living in 1984, he’d be the poster up on all the bedrooms of the UK."

— Adam Anderson

skywasempty asked: Your posts are always amazing, What can I say, your whole blog is just perfect. <3

Oh my! Thank you very much!

What can I say after such a lovely message! You brought so much joy with your kind words that melted my heart! It’s all for you so thank you for your attention and the opportunity to share this crazy Hurts world with you! It’s my pleasure! And thank you for your time! *smile

"Theo talks about a bewildering episode in Milan when, halfway through a gig, the band took a scheduled break between songs. In the wings, darkness descended. “I sat in the corner with my head in my hands. I blacked out. Adam said, ‘we’re going back on’. I said, ‘I’m not going back on’. It was so dark. I physically couldn’t bring myself to stand up and go back on stage.” Eventually, Adam got Theo on stage. “After the show I ran off stage, straight to the dressing room. I climbed out of the window, walked down the fire escape and sat in the freezing cold. I didn’t know what the fuck was going on."

— Theo Hutchcraft

Hurts at Electronic Beats (Bratislava, 19.04.2013)

"I didn’t really have much to leave behind. I’ve had a transient life, chasing adventure. I lived in the Thistle on Leicester Square for almost a month at one point, but I don’t need security to be happy, I find it more invigorating to live a life on the run. I have lost all concept of the real world and real life. I try to stay away from it. I don’t think you have to accept a life that someone else wants for us. I always felt that way but I’ve accepted it more now. There won’t be a normal life ahead for me. I don’t want one."

— Theo Hutchcraft

"Having left home at 15, Adam learned long ago to fend for himself. “I only have myself to thank for having done well. So I feel I have to internalise everything. I fix myself. It’s probably very unhealthy. I do think that the choices I make musically are better than if I had a normal, balanced life. Theo’s self belief is stronger than mine, and that’s admirable."

  • If you had a sister, would you be happy for her to start dating Theo?
  • Adam: No! I'd be very concerned for her to be honest.
  • What advice would you give her?
  • Adam: Don't let him left the country.
"There’s a thing called impostor syndrome, where you can’t absorb praise, I hated praise. Couldn’t stand it. I’m in a better place than I was a couple of years ago, but back then I felt quite alone. As soon as we got success they hated it. They resented me for it. Something had to give. It was difficult at first, but then I said fuck it. I moved to London. I decided to give my whole life to Hurts. I like not having time for anything else. I like being a musical zombie. I like being so immersed that I don’t have time for anything else."

— Adam Anderson

"I was a milkman, which made me eternally resent early mornings. I still hate them now. And I was an ice cream man. In fact I learnt to play guitar whilst sat in the ice cream van."

Theo, do you know, Adam has changed somehow during these years?

  • Adam: It's a good question.
  • Theo: So much. He's changed so much.
  • Adam: Too much.
  • Theo: Yeah, he's tasting food just got a lot more refind during these few years, 'cause we've only used to eat rise and noodles. But now he's tasting food.
  • How about Theo?
  • Adam: Theo, he's tasting food has always been the same. Basically Theo just eats anything and everything but also in weird combinations. You know it's a sort of there's no sort of intelligence to his culinary skills he's just eats whatever he wants. And I'm more this with this this with this. I don't know what's best.

The best from an Independent article: ‘Back in black’

…Among their most striking new tracks is “The Road”, inspired by both Cormac McCarthy’s novel of the same name and JG Ballard’s Crash – or the “two bleakest books of all time”, as Hutchcraft smiles. So, oblique though the lyrics may be, it’s basically a post-apocalyptic ballad about people who are turned on by car crashes? “Yeah – and [the point was] also to make a song that was creepy… to make you go eeurgggh,” he says, hunching his shoulders slightly comically, as if we were actually talking about a song inspired by “What’s the Time, Mr Wolf?”

…Anderson names his late granddad as his chief style inspiration (“He used to wear waistcoats and always had nice polished shoes, even when he went senile”) while Hutchcraft plumps for Jeremy Irons, Sean Connery and David Lynch. “I think we want to live in a film, basically,” the latter adds later. That film quite possibly being Dr Strangelove, to judge by the sinister black leather gloves that have become his signature handwear and stage comforter. “It’s not an S&M thing, regardless of what people might think,” he assures me sweetly.

…Certainly, they deserve to get bigger. You just hope they can hold on to some hauteur, too. At the end of our interview, Hutchcraft mentions he is about to film Celebrity Juice. A week later, I watch a YouTube clip of the Keith Lemon panel show, which sees Hutchcraft spanked by Holly Willoughby as part of a round entitled “Stop me when it Hurts”. Which makes me a bit sad. Still, the touring is beginning in earnest again, so they’ll be back to immersing themselves in freedom, fear, decadence and all those other highfalutin abstracts once more. And then I really do hope they get to play their ultimate gig one day, even if we won’t necessarily get to see it. “In Pompeii, like Pink Floyd, in the middle of the amphitheatre, with no one else around,” that is.
